When Exercise Becomes an Obsession

But, what happens when that “healthy” work out motivation and behavior takes on a darker side? Self-disciplined individuals with perfectionistic tendencies and a strong desire to compete (even with themselves) are at a high risk for developing training and exercising behavior that is excessive and dangerous. The earlier intervention occurs, the easier and faster the individual can recover. That reality makes this book invaluable.

“When Work Out Dedication Turns into Unhealthy Obsession”

The pursuit of athletic excellence, superior physical fitness, and improved body image can take an ugly turn if the motivation veers away from health and becomes about weight loss and seeking the “ideal body shape.” The very same qualities that lead to optimal performance and fitness can also drive individuals to take drastic and unhealthy paths to get there. Working out becomes compulsory and disordered eating patterns emerge. Sports and gyms are fertile grounds for the development of Anorexia Athletica or Hypergymnasia. For those individuals who are showing early signs, an Exercise Addiction Questionnaire and recovery suggestions are included. Anorexia Athletica/Hypergymnasia gradually take control of the individual’s thinking and behavior.

The 10 Greatest Race Horses of All Time

Brilliant, precocious, altogether the greatest horse of the 1990s (only Cigar can rival him). 15 of her 16 starts came in Group 1 or Grade 1 races, but her crowning achievement is surely her back to back victories in the Breeders Cup Mile, both in utterly dominant style.

Holy Bull – 13 wins from 16 starts. Undefeated as a 2-year-old, Triple Crown winner at 3. Other Horse Racing Articles By This Author:

Secretariat – 16 wins from 21 starts. Pity poor Sham, an outstanding racehorse in his own right, who was a game second in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness before being annihilated with all the rest in Secretariat’s incomparable Belmont Stakes win, during which he set a world record for 12 furlongs that still stands to this day.

Man o’ War – 20 wins from 21 starts. A threat to break the track record every time he stepped on the racetrack, his astonishing 1:57.4 in the 1980 Strub still stands as the record for 10 furlongs at Santa Anita

Kelso – 39 wins from 63 starts. His Triple Crown battles with Alydar will never by forgotten. The only filly, the only foreign-bred, and the only turf horse on this list, which says something about her greatness. Only denied a Triple Crown by a poorly judged ride in the Belmont Stakes by Ron Franklin. Perhaps not as consistent as others on this list, but his durability and willingness to take on all comers more than compensates.

Native Dancer – 21 wins from 22 starts. Only a narrow loss to Dark Star after a rough trip in the 1953 Kentucky Derby blemishes an otherwise perfect career

Dr. Twice named champion sprinter, and once Horse of the Year, he was among the best from 7 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles.

Miesque – 14 wins from 18 starts.

. Fager – 18 wins from 22 starts. Crushed Affirmed in their two meetings a Belmont Park in the fall of 1978.

Spectacular Bid – 26 wins from 30 starts. His lone loss, ironically to a horse named Upset, came during his 2-year-old season in the 1919 but hardly mars an otherwise dominating career. I’ve tried to include the very best of the best without regard to gender or racing surface.

Seattle Slew – 14 wins from 17 starts. Fager. Beat Spectacular Bid in their only meeting, but was beaten handily by Seattle Slew in their two races.

Needless to say, this list represents one man’s subjective opinions as to the greatest of all time, and the horses represented here are only those who have raced on American soil. He might rank higher on this list if not for an unaccountably disastrous performance as the 2-1 favorite in the 1994 Kentucky Derby. Champion two and three-year old.

Affirmed – 22 wins from 29 starts. The greatest of the great, his triple crown campaign, during which he set official track records at Churchill Downs and Belmont Park, and an unofficial track record at Pimlico, will never be exceeded or even matched. His Kentucky Derby win, which came despite being rushed to the lead by Jean Cruguet after an awkward start, may be the greatest ever. His heart and intelligence combined with speed and stamina to make him one of the all time great champions. Those who argue that many non-American horses deserve inclusion will get no argument from me. Man o’ War was the first great race horse to really capture the public’s imagination and raise horse racing in the public consciousness. Great fillies like Personal Ensign and Ruffian did not make the list simply because I don’t think that on their best day they could beat any of the horses on this list on their best days (see also my article about Rachel Alexandra, about whom I would say the same.) Without further ado, the 10 Greatest Race Horses of All Time:

Honorable Mentions: Sunday Silence, Easy Goer, Buckpasser, Ghostzapper, Count Fleet, War Admiral, Seabiscuit, Damascus, Cigar, Personal Ensign, Ruffian, Risen Star, John Henry, Swaps. There’s fast, faster, and Dr. The only gelding on the list, “Mighty” Kelso, as he was inevitably described, was named Horse of the Year an incredible five times from 1960-1964, a feat that will surely never be matched

Casino-Gaming :: Sports betting tips

This is without a doubt the most important aspect of betting sports and possibly the most neglected. They must keep on top of EVERY sport and EVERY game. All it takes is a little research of the sports books you usually bet at.

Below you will find a short list of basic sports betting tips and advice.

There is probably no better bet in sports than playing an underdog at home. The best way to win money betting sports is to develop a niche and follow it closely.

Sports betting tip #5 – Check the Odds

The second most important aspect of betting on sports is shopping for the best number. There will be more discrepancy in the numbers on different sports at different sports books.

Sports betting tip #7 – Bet at the Right Time

Sports betting tip #4 – Do your Homework

The sharp bettors tend to bet underdogs, and they tend to bet them early. The first key to proper money management is to be sure not to bet more than you can afford to lose.

Sports betting tip #6 – Play Home Dogs

Sports betting tip #2 – Shopping for Numbers

There is a reason the casinos in Las Vegas supply you with free drinks while you are gambling. Teams play inspired ball at home. Slim underdogs regularly win outright.. To be a successful sports bettor you need to operate with a clear mind.

Sports betting tip #3 – Never Gamble While under the Influence

As a bettor, you have the advantage of streamlining your research, which is something the sports books are not at liberty to do. Squares usually bet later in the day (or week, for football) and they tend to pick the favorites. When you are betting big bucks the difference in odds translate into a huge difference in your payout. Because alcohol clouds your judgment and usually helps you to make rash decisions you usually wouldn’t otherwise make. If you like an underdog, it is best to get your bet in as late as possible, where there is heavy action from squares on favorites.

Sports betting tip #1 – Money Management

Some sports books have better odds on parlays and teasers

Sports :: How to Win at Betting: Sports Gambling Winning Percentage, What You Need to Know

In the question above, it would be much better to be a 55-percent handicapper if you were playing 150 games a month, as opposed to a 60-percent handicapper playing one game a day. A winning percentage of 55-percent sure doesn’t sound as sexy as a 60-percent handicapper, but if your volume of plays is high enough, it can certainly be much more profitable.

Making it more difficult for sports bettors is that some sports services will claim to have won 200 units in a particular sport, but don’t mention that they release 10- or 20-unit plays, along with several 100-unit “locks” at the end of the year if things aren’t going so well and they need something to base next year’s advertising on.

The only statistic that sports bettors should be concerned with is units won, which is the amount of profit, or loss, they have over time, and not worry nearly as much about winning percentage. At the end of the month, the 55-percent handicapper would have gone 83-67 for a gain of 9.3 units, while the 60-percent handicapper would have gone 18-12 for a profit of 4.8 units, so the 55-percent handicapper has made nearly twice as much.

With baseball season coming back in about 4 months, many sports gamblers will be seeing ads from different sports services claiming winning percentages of 65-percent for baseball, and that’s entirely possibly, but what the services aren’t saying is that the majority of their selections were favorites of -200 or more, turning that 65-percent handicapping into a losing proposition.. The 55-percent handicapper is using what is commonly referred to as the Wal-Mart Approach, which is to have a lot of volume with the expectation of grinding out a small profit. And as is the case with the Arkansas-based giant, many times this will be more profitable than being extremely selective and doing a small amount of volume, even if the mark-up is higher.

If somebody were to ask you if you would rather be a 60-percent handicapper or a 55-percent handicapper, which would you choose? The obvious answer is that it’s better to be a 60-percent handicapper, but that isn’t necessarily true.

For the bettors that do their own handicapping, however, units won is really the only thing you should be concerned with, as that ultimately is going to translate into the bottom line

How to Make Money Handicapping Horse Races and Betting on Horseracing

If the success rate for handicappers is 5-10% then it is probably 1-2% for those depending upon luck.

On the other hand, the ones who depend upon luck invest nothing but money and very little time. There are many more people, perhaps millions around the world, trying to make money betting on horse races depending upon luck or some other system to be a winner.. The only work they do is to walk into the club house and maybe read a simple list of horses and riders.

Your chances of success are much greater if you educate yourself, prepare, practice, and work hard, but there are no guarantees. The thrill of winning is probably pretty close to the same for each group, though the handicappers also have the satisfaction of working hard and getting rewarded for it.

The big advantage that the handicapper has over the gambler is that he or she has an idea of each horse’s chances of winning and therefore, how much a horse has to pay to win in order to make money on such bets in the long run. That edge is what separates gamblers from handicappers and is why, in the long run, handicappers win more, but in all fairness, they don’t just win it, they earn it.

The way you make money handicapping and betting on horse races is in finding a good bet.

For some people, horse racing handicapping is an intellectual sport and they prepare themselves and work hard at it. The ones who depend upon luck or some other esoteric method are more like lottery players than handicappers, but the thing they all have in common is that all there money goes into the same pool and some from each group will be successful while many will not.

There are thousands of people trying to make a living from horse racing by handicapping the horse races and then betting on horse races

How To Master Sports Betting

It is only going to place you in a difficult position and as much as you might think it won’t be, your decision making ability is going to be compromised. Also look into how sides perform the week after doing certain travel. This means that when you place your bets you need to be thinking clearly and concisely. On the flip side, you shouldn’t bet against a team because someone you don’t like roots for that team. What is the point of drowning yourself in statistics and research for what you could just as easily decided with a flip of the coin? So you need to sift through it all and just take the morsels here and there which are really important and make a difference. You want to know who trained and who didn’t. You shouldn’t favor a team because they are the team your best friend supports. It could provide great insight as to predicting what will occur.

Speaking of the long run, this is what you should be focused on. It doesn’t matter if it is pretty or not.

In the case of team sports, injuries are important. For instance, if you are pretty certain that a side is going to win and they are getting good odds for this than take this. You will be better off for doing so in the long run.

Sports betting is an easy way to make a tough living. It’s all about accumulating winnings. Upsets are always going to happen but see when it makes the most sense when to go for that and when not to. Anything less than this and it is going to be a disaster. Look for value bets. So if you suffer a bad break along the way, just remember it goes with the territory. So do yourself a favor and swear off them. You don’t want to lose money just because you weren’t on top of your game.

The most important thing is that you need to take emotion out of the equation. Business is business and you need to be concentrating on who is going to win regardless of who likes and who doesn’t like which team.

Information and doing your homework is important, but you don’t want to full into the trap of information overload. The weather conditions also make a difference as they do in horse racing. Travel is a factor such as when East Coast sides travel to the West Coast and vice versa. Hopefully this kind of thinking will keep you grounded. Thus when you are doing well, you will still be focused and when you aren’t doing so well you won’t be thinking that it’s the end of the world. You can’t let the highs and lows affect you too much.

Because of this point, it is probably better if you steer clear from any matches involving the teams that you like. Over time, you will learn what it should be that you should be paying attention to.. If you are going to do it you need to do it properly and master it, it means you are completely organized and focused

New Jersey allows sports betting

– Gov. Other leagues and the NCAA did not immediately return messages Monday.

The governor says sports betting is legal under previous federal rulings as long as wagers don’t involve a collegiate game played in New Jersey or a New Jersey college team elsewhere in the country.

The governor said he took his cue from previous federal court rulings that found that nothing in New Jersey law prohibits the casinos and horse racing tracks from offering sports betting.

He said he does not expect sports betting to begin until a court rules that it is legal.

His action, through the state attorney general’s office, is likely to be challenged by the professional and collegiate sports leagues that fought New Jersey’s efforts to overturn a ban on sports betting in all but four states. This is all over but the shouting.”

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear New Jersey’s appeal in June, saying, “You know, that’s the way it goes.”

Lesniak said he expects the leagues to challenge the move, but predicted: “They don’t have any arguments left to make. Nevada has allowed betting on sports for more than 60 years, and Delaware, Montana and Oregon have at times permitted more limited betting. branch of William Hill agreed to be the exclusive provider of sports betting at Monmouth Park, but is taking a wait-and-see approach.

Information from ESPN.com’s David Purdum and The Associated Press is included in this report. Bets wouldn’t have been taken on games involving New Jersey colleges or college games played in the state.

Dennis Drazin, an attorney and adviser to the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horseman and Monmouth Park, told ESPN in early September that he believes the track could have an operating sports book within three weeks after legalization.

Christie suggested casinos and tracks could start offering betting immediately, but it’s not clear that will happen. Like others, we recognize that legalized sports betting is inevitable, and will be a good outcome for customers, states and the sports leagues. “The motion simply would clarify and formalize that authority and give clear guidance to casinos and racetracks waiting to open a sports pool in New Jersey.”

“That to some degree will dictate how the race tracks and casinos move forward,” Beck told ESPN.

Casino executives did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Christie’s action.

A month ago, Christie vetoed a bill that would have pushed New Jersey to circumvent the federal ban on gambling on professional and college sports. That effort ended with the U.S. “Obviously, this is a significant development. Christie said at the time disagreed with the court decision but feels the law is “sacrosanct.”

The NFL had no comment when reached by ESPN.com.

“Based on the arguments of the sports leagues and the United States Department of Justice, the 3rd Circuit has already ruled that New Jersey can carry out sports wagering as described in today’s statewide directive,” the governor’s office wrote in a statement. State Sen. CEO Joe Asher said in a statement. Chris Christie’s administration issued a directive Monday allowing the state’s casinos and racetracks to offer sports betting, a move likely to be challenged in court by sports leagues.

Voters in New Jersey overwhelmingly endorsed legal sports betting in a nonbinding referendum in 2011. “People should book their hotel rooms in Atlantic City for the Super Bowl now because there won’t be any available in February.”

The professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey leagues, as well as the National Collegiate Athletic Association, all opposed New Jersey’s effort to legalize sports betting, saying it could give the appearance that the integrity of the games has been compromised.

N.J. Supreme Court declining to hear the case.

The park built a sports bar last year that was designed to be transformed into a sports book quickly if sports betting were legalized.

“We are reviewing the Attorney General’s directive and the motion filed in U.S. Raymond Lesniak, one of the legislature’s strongest supporters of sports betting. Rachel Ryan, a spokeswoman for the Meadowlands Racetrack said Monday that the track has no plans to offer sports betting now.

“Victory at last!” said state Sen. Jennifer Beck, a Republican who represents the area where Monmouth Park resides, said Monday that she would like to see the track begin taking bets as soon as this upcoming weekend, but wants to see the reaction from the sports leagues.

The move is a turnaround for Christie, who initially seemed resigned to defeat once the U.S. State lawmakers soon enacted a law to allow for betting at tracks and in casinos. The seaside resort has already lost three of the 12 casinos with which it began this year, and a fourth one is due to shut its doors next week; about 8,000 casino workers will have lost their jobs since January.

But those actions ran up against the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, enacted by Congress to restrict betting on sports to a few states. District Court,” William Hill U.S. New Jersey missed a 1991 deadline in the law that would have allowed sports betting in Atlantic City..

Monmouth Park, a thoroughbred track in Oceansport, New Jersey, has been outspoken that it will take the lead once sports betting became legal.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. In light of our significant investment at Monmouth Park, we are happy that it appears racetracks and casinos in New Jersey will be taking sports bets sooner rather than later.”

In addition to the directive, Christie also had the state file a motion in federal court asking a judge to clarify or modify a February 2013 ruling that blocks a licensing program New Jersey had passed for sports betting in the state.

The move came hours before Christie was to convene a closed-door summit on the future of Atlantic City

How the Sports Betting Line is Made by RJ Bell

This usually includes having up-to-date power ratings on each team.

Experts working for the individual books having a strong opinion on the game

Once betting begins, sportsbooks can adjust the line at any time. Stated another way, they want to create a line that half the people find appealing to bet one way while the other half find it appealing to bet the other way (known as ‘dividing the action’). We do this by drawing from past experiences and applying them to current situations. In doing so they attempt to make more attractive the team that is getting less action.

The opening line is the first line created by the oddsmakers, which is then sent out to sportsbooks. For example, the public might have heavy betting interest week after week on a popular college football team such as USC. “We’re not trying to pick the team that covers the spread, we’re trying to make it a coin flip, a tough decision (for the bettor). Reasons for such adjustments include:

“You either have a passion for it or you don’t,” Seba said. People think it’s much more complicated, but it’s not.”

The last step in the line-making process for each oddsmaker is taking one final look to determine whether or not the line “feels right.” This is where common sense and past experience with how games are bet enters into the picture.

Oddsmakers can also change the line depending on various event-related factors such as player injuries or weather. Of course there is an entire method to the madness on how the opening line is created. By necessity their approach is very research-oriented and concise, since with millions of dollars at risk there is little margin for error. Each of these oddsmakers bring unique opinions, strengths and weaknesses to the process. Also, adjustments are made after reading each team’s local newspapers to get a sense of what the coaches & players are thinking going into the game. If an oddsmaker comes up with a preliminary line of USC -7, then an adjustment up to -7.5 or -8 would be made in response to the public’s expected USC bias. Oddsmakers have to determine if any changes are necessary and send out an “adjusted line.”

What Is the Line Trying to Accomplish? .

For example, if the pointspread on a game is 7 and most of the money is coming in on the underdog (taking the +7), sportsbooks will then move the number down to 6 ½ to try and attract money on the favorite. In our extended interview, Seba explained that there are 4-5 oddsmakers assigned to make lines for each of the major sports (pro & college football and basketball; MLB, NHL, boxing, golf).

Individual books having players who consistently bet with certain tendencies (such as an extreme bias toward favorites or toward a certain popular team like USC)

Once the opening line is released by LVSC, the individual sportsbooks decide if they want to make any adjustments before offering it to the public. Mike Seba is a Senior Oddsmaker at LVSC and has been making lines for the last six years.

Oddsmakers at LVSC are professional sports junkies who love what they do and would probably do it for nothing if you asked them, but they do get paid for it. Obviously, if the line comes out a week ahead of the event (which is the case in football), there is much that could happen during the week leading up to the event that could affect the line. Divided action means the sportsbook is guaranteed a profit on the game because of the fee charged to the bettor (called juice or vig – typically $11 bet to win $10). That is not the case at all – their intent is NOT to evenly split the ATS result between the teams; rather, their goal is to attract equal betting action on both sides. If we’ve done that, we’ve done our job.”

How the Opening Line Is Made

Las Vegas Sports Consultants (LVSC) is the world’s premier oddsmaking company and the most respected authority on making the lines. Of the 4-5 oddsmakers, generally the 2 most respected opinions are weighed more heavily by the Odds Director before he decides on the final line.

Why the Line Changes

RJ Bell

Contributed by:

“The #1 thing for us is to make a line for each game that creates good two-way action.

There is a common misconception that point spreads represent the oddsmakers’ prediction of how many points the favorite will win by. The power ratings are adjusted after each game a team plays.

A round-table discussion among the 4-5 oddsmakers involved in making the line for each sport is then conducted and a consensus line is decided upon by the Odds Director before it is released to the sportsbooks.

Power ratings are the oddsmaker’s value of each team and are used as a guide to calculate a “preliminary” pointspread on an upcoming game. By moving the line, sportsbooks can influence how the public bets on a particular game. Seba explained that it all starts with each oddsmaker creating a line on each game based upon their own personal approach.

“The main objective is that our clients get equal action on both sides,” Seba said.

Once a game’s power rating based pointspread is determined, the oddsmaker will make adjustments to that line after considering each team’s most recent games played and previous games played against that opponent.

Since the oddsmaker’s ultimate goal is equally dividing the betting action, public perception and betting patterns must be taken into account.

Moving the line is the oddsmaker’s effort to balance betting action, and often times such moves can have a major impact on a bettor’s decision.

The purpose of these adjustments, like all line adjustments, is to more equally divide the betting action. Examples of non-game factors that would require an adjustment to a team’s power rating are key player injuries and player trades
